- Environment
- Color
First thing first, my ideal classroom would be painted pale sky blue because, along with other colors, it is clinically proven to calm the mind of adolescents therefore saving more attention for learning. Diana Vining says, Blues, greens, and purples are cooler and tend to be calming....Darker colors tend to make spaces look smaller and more intimate." (Vining 6) Feeling comfortable is an important part of learning; it is hard to learn if you feel stressed or cluttered.
- Arrangement
There will be many posters of different formulas and rules such as P.E.M.D.A.S and the quadratic formula. All student seats will be group sized rectangle tables. All students will be facing in opposite direction of the windows (faces facing board) to reduce the easy chance of daydreaming.
There are more precautions then most people know that are vital for arranging a class, especially safety. (Eredics)
Racheal Wannarka says, "Seating arrangements are important classroom setting events because they have the potential to help prevent problem behaviors that decrease student attention and diminish available instructional time." (Wannarka) I believe that no seating arrangement is perfect but mine is designed to cut out alot of childish arguments to increase learning as well as other things. This can be a problem just as drastic as sight. To ensure each student can see clearly even if siting behind a bigger pier, the floor will be inclined so the students in the back can see over the students in the front.
Although we can not control the number of students there are and this is in most cases not possible my ideal classroom is smaller as opposed to a large class of almost forty. This gives more individualized learning. My parents always placed me in smaller schools for this reason and I feel as though smaller classrooms work best.
- Organization
Many of the factors of my classroom model contribute to organization such as the inclined floors as talked about before, the backs facing the windows, and the neat isles just in case anyone has to leave; no one else will be majorly disturbed.
- Technology/Access - what is available to your students? How will you use it? what will it promote?
The storage creates in the back of the classroom are actually laptop carts that remained locked at all times. During an online assignment of any type maybe Study Island or Fun Brain. The bookshelves in the back contain material that students may find interesting and they are free to borrow with my consent. The Interactive White Board in front of the class is what will be used to display material and previous lessons and notes can be accessed after class or school in case a student needs more attention to grasp the material.
- Accommodations For Students
Desks are wheel chair accessible, there will not need any special sets because all of the desks will be suitable for walking impaired and non impaired students. that is one of the benefits of the large square tables other than for better communication among students and group work.
- Personal Learning Network
As a future teacher I know that teachers must always be aware of changing generations/ technology and culture and must always be able to adapt or in other words, learn to unlearn. This can be possible by creating my own personal bookmarks of webpages (blogs, wikis, etc.) that are constantly updating along with the needs of students. Maybe you are asking, Why should I social network?
- Community of Practice-
My blog (which will be given to students parent and the overall community will incorporate tools that allow anybody (other teachers, staff, parents and even students) to anonymously or openly to post comments/criticism about my class, classroom, rules, instruction or anything. I will also be available on social networks such as twitter, facebook, etc.. They will also be able to talk among themselves and myself about anything just to stay connected as a community. With either choice this can teach students digital citizenship and can even be a mini lesson maybe if my class is ahead of schedule. After a email or any other means of communication is verified, parents can contact me and I will let them know how their student is doing academically or even socially.
